Archaeology Wednesday 17th July

This Wednesday 17th July we will meet at Brook Bay car park at 10:00.
We will split into two groups as there is a choice of activities.
Both activities will take us past Sudmoor Point, south of the site of the prospective Roman building we found down by the Military Road on our geophysical survey, and where we will soon excavate. The cliff here is notable for the late Iron Age settlement finds, lost to the sea in the 1950s.
Option 1.
I will lead a walk from the car park along the beach for about 1 mile east to examine the cliff past Sudmoor Point. We will be looking for finds on the beach that have eroded from the cliff falls and will also look at the cliff face for evidence of human activity.
NOTE: This walk could be physically challenging. The tide will be falling but we may have to scramble over rocks and fallen muddy debris to reach our destination. Waterproof footwear is strongly advised. Low tide will be around 14:00 so we have plenty of time to complete our activity and return to the car park.

Option 2.
If you want a less physically challenging option, Helen will lead a walk from the car park along the top of the cliff for a distance of about 1 mile east, reaching roughly the same location as the beach walk. You will be able to look across to our excavation site and get a sense of the landscape where we believe the settlement(s) may have been.
