Wight Studies: Proceedings of the Isle of Wight Natural and Archaeological Society

Wight Studies is an annual publication, usually available in August, containing papers on the natural history, geology, landscape, and archaeology of the Isle of Wight. It is available on publication as a benefit of membership to members of the Society. For older volumes, a facility for digital download from the Society’s website is being developed.

History:

  • The Proceedings was first issued in 1920, under the editorship of Frank Morey, one of the Society’s founders and its first General Secretary. Early volumes contain items relating to Society business including membership lists and accounts, as well as nature notes, finds of local significance, reports of meetings, lectures and excursions, and obituaries.
  • Each volume was produced in parts, generally issued annually until 1987. From 1987, the Proceedings have been published as a single annual volume. At this time, the content changed in character to include mostly papers of local investigations and annual species group reports, with Society meetings being reported in a Bulletin issued twice a year. Bird Reports were initially issued within Proceedings in the mid-1950s, and later as supplements to volumes. Since 1996, a separate annual Isle of Wight Bird Report has been produced jointly with the Isle of Wight Ornithological Group
  • The page size was initially 5 7/8” by 8 ¼” (similar to A5); it was changed to Metric quarto in 1986 and in 2015, it became an A4 volume with full colour available.
  • The title of ‘Wight Studies‘ was used for the first time in 2008 for Volume 23; the official title is still ‘Proceedings of the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society’.

The Editorial Board is responsible for the content of the Proceedings. Contributions are welcomed; information regarding submission of articles for consideration is available on request.

Past issues of the Proceedings are available for inspection in the Society’s library when the office is open.

Copies of Papers from Society Proceedings can be supplied at a cost of £5.00 per Paper.
