6 members joined for a bracing walk at Thorness Bay spotting a total of 20 bird species. A Pied Wagtail, Pheasant, Blackbird and Magpie were seen between the car park and the beach. An unexpected high tide and windy conditions meant there was relatively little to see on the shoreline – Black-headed Gull, Herring Gull and Common Gull were bobbing on the water along with a single Oystercatcher and a small group of Carrion Crow and Rook on the beach. A lone Swallow flew across the marsh. Heading inland we were delighted to see small flocks of Linnet and Chaffinch around the mature hedgerows along with Woodpigeon and Robin. Retracing our steps we saw a Little Egret in the marsh and a Stonechat amongst the reeds, accompanied by a loud Cetti’s Warbler. Returning via the field in front of the caravans we also picked up Blue Tit and Meadow Pipit.
This site is becoming increasingly busy as the holiday park develops and better access to walkers created by the new King Charles III England Coast footpath. Early morning visits advised for birding.
