It was a beautiful sunny morning for a summer walk around Bembridge Harbour and Lagoons. We set off from St Helens Duver National Trust car park and headed for the causeway path. An immature Common Gull was visible amongst a small group of Black-headed Gull. A view down the Eastern Yar yielded the usual Cormorants in the trees and we had a good view of a Marsh Harrier sitting low in a tree. Bembridge Lagoons delivered on Cetti’s Warbler, Reed Warbler and Water Rail – heard only. We returned via Embankment Road where the incoming tide gave us decent visibility of Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel and Curlew as well as good numbers of Mediterranean Gull in Bembridge Harbour.
Six members took part in the walk, recording a total of 36 bird species: Black-headed Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Cormorant, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Curlew, Great Crested Grebe, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen, Water Rail, Mute Swan, Pied Wagtail, Cetti’s Warbler, Reed Warbler, Great Tit, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Chiffchaff, Blackbird, Woodpigeon, Carrion Crow, Swallow, Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker.
