The work of the IWNHAS has received a mention in The Travel Section of The Guardian 24.08.19.

This was ahead of the annual ‘Under the Pier’ event led by Arc Consulting where iWatchWildlife and volunteers from The Society support the event by carrying out species recording and ID in this mini-marine bioblitz. (more…)

The annual Isle of Wight BioBlitz took place this year at Haseley Manor Nature Reserve on Sunday 7th July. Though not a public event this time, there was a good turn-out of interested members of the IWNHAS and more Recorders came together than at any previous Bioblitz event.

The final tally of species records for the event stands as 484 – which is very impressive considering the difficult weather conditions during the day on Sunday. The full list can be viewed and downloaded here: Bioblitz_2019_Final Species List.

The Isle of Wight Moth Report 2018 is now available, and can be downloaded here.

Iain Outlaw says: “In what turned out to be a good year for moth recording there was a slow start to the season. The first three months of the year were particularly poor with overall numbers and species diversity lower than normal.

“A prolonged spell of hot dry weather in June and July saw a big change in moth numbers and a decent run of migrant moths. (more…)

The annual IW Recorders’ Conference is set to make a return next month Saturday 2nd February, 2pm – 4:30pm at Arreton Community Centre. As usual, there will be a packed programme of presentations showcasing current species related projects and surveys, displays and of course delicious cakes and tea during the interval. (more…)

Local Naturalist George Greiff has made the National Shortlist for the Adult Newcomer category in the 2018 National Biodiversity Network Awards for biological recording and information sharing.

George, who has recently embarked on his first year of a Degree at Oxford was nominated for his outstanding contribution to our local knowledge of distribution and abundance of lower plants on the Island (Mosses, Lichens and Liverworts). (more…)
